Parents Awareness and Training Workshop Brings Hope to Families of Learners with Disabilities in Makongeni, Thika

Empowering Parents to Build a More Inclusive Future

As part of its commitment to advancing inclusive education across Africa, eduLET Africa, in collaboration with eKitabu, successfully conducted a Parents Awareness and Training Workshop in Makongeni, Thika, Kiambu County, Kenya. The workshop brought together parents and caregivers of children with disabilities for a day of learning, dialogue, and empowerment focused on improving support for children both at home and in school.

The event created a safe and welcoming space where parents could openly share their experiences, challenges, and aspirations while gaining practical knowledge on how to better support the educational, emotional, and social development of their children.

More than a training session, the workshop marked the beginning of a collaborative journey toward ensuring that every child with a disability has the opportunity to learn, communicate, and thrive.

Understanding the Challenges Families Face

Parents and caregivers play a vital role in the development of every child. However, many families raising children with disabilities often have limited access to information, training, and support services.

Throughout the workshop, parents shared personal stories about the daily challenges they face, including communication barriers, limited access to specialized educational resources, financial constraints, and social stigma surrounding disability.

Many participants expressed that they had never attended a training dedicated to helping them understand the unique needs of their children. For some, it was the first opportunity to connect with other parents facing similar experiences, creating a strong sense of community and mutual support.

The discussions reinforced the importance of equipping parents with the knowledge and confidence needed to become active partners in their children's education.

Promoting Positive Parenting and Inclusion

Facilitators from eduLET Africa and eKitabu guided participants through discussions on:

A Strong Call for Sign Language Learning

One of the most significant discussions during the workshop centered on communication with children who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Many parents openly shared that they were unable to communicate effectively with their children because they had never learned Kenyan Sign Language (KSL).

Several parents explained that although they deeply loved and cared for their children, everyday communication remained difficult. Simple conversations about school, emotions, health, or daily activities often became frustrating for both parents and children.

This challenge highlighted an important gap—not in the willingness of parents to support their children, but in the availability of accessible opportunities to learn sign language.

Parents expressed a strong desire for a flexible and affordable platform where they could learn Kenyan Sign Language at their own pace.

This feedback reaffirmed the importance of eduLET Learn, which is being developed to provide interactive sign language courses for learners, parents, teachers, caregivers, and communities. By equipping families with practical communication skills, eduLET Learn aims to strengthen relationships at home and create more inclusive environments for children with hearing impairments.

Conversations About Educational Opportunities

Another key issue raised by participants was access to educational opportunities beyond primary school.

Many parents expressed concern about the financial challenges of educating children with disabilities and asked whether there were organizations, scholarship programmes, or sponsorship opportunities that could support their children's education.

Parents shared aspirations of seeing their children pursue secondary education, vocational training, and higher education but noted that financial barriers often limit these opportunities.

In response, eduLET Africa reaffirmed its commitment to exploring partnerships with governments, development organizations, foundations, and donors to identify scholarship opportunities and educational support programmes for deserving learners with disabilities.

The organization also committed to sharing relevant information with families as new opportunities become available.

The Role of Technology in Inclusive Education

During the workshop, participants were introduced to eduLET Africa's vision of using technology to remove barriers to learning.

Parents learned about four key solutions being developed to support learners with disabilities:

eduLET Learn

An inclusive digital learning platform offering accessible courses, including Kenyan Sign Language, interactive learning resources, and teacher support tools.

eduLET AI

An AI-powered learning assistant designed to personalize education while providing accessibility features such as text-to-speech, speech-to-text, simplified learning support, and intelligent tutoring.

eduLET Hub

An offline connectivity solution that enables schools and communities to access digital learning resources without requiring continuous internet connectivity.

eduLET Library

A digital library providing accessible educational resources, including audiobooks, Braille-ready materials, sign language content, curriculum resources, and teacher guides.

Parents welcomed these innovations and emphasized the importance of ensuring that such technologies remain affordable and accessible to families and schools across Kenya.

Partnership with eKitabu

The success of the workshop was made possible through the collaboration between eduLET Africa and eKitabu, an organization dedicated to improving access to inclusive education through accessible digital content and innovative learning solutions.

By combining expertise in community engagement, accessibility, and educational technology, the partnership provided parents with practical information while encouraging meaningful dialogue about the future of inclusive education.

The collaboration demonstrates the value of partnerships in creating sustainable solutions that empower learners with disabilities and the communities that support them.
