Empowering Deaf Learners Through Digital Sign Language Education

eduLET Africa > Blog

The Challenge

Many learners with hearing impairments struggle to access quality education because teachers, classmates, and even parents have limited knowledge of Kenyan Sign Language (KSL). This communication barrier often leads to social isolation, reduced classroom participation, and lower academic performance.

During a community engagement workshop in Makongeni, Thika, parents shared that they wanted to communicate more effectively with their deaf children but had never had the opportunity to learn sign language.

Our Solution

eduLET Africa introduced eduLET Learn, an inclusive digital learning platform that provides interactive Kenyan Sign Language courses for:

  • Learners
  • Parents
  • Teachers
  • Caregivers
  • Community members

The platform includes video demonstrations, quizzes, practical exercises, and self-paced lessons that can be accessed both online and offline.

Results

  • Over 120 parents participated in sign language awareness sessions.
  • Schools expressed interest in integrating digital sign language learning into classrooms.
  • Families reported increased confidence in communicating with their children.
  • The initiative strengthened collaboration between parents and schools.

Impact

By equipping families and educators with sign language skills, eduLET Africa is creating more inclusive classrooms and improving communication between deaf learners and their communities.

  • AI-powered learning support

without requiring continuous internet access.

Results

  • Schools gained uninterrupted access to digital learning resources.
  • Hundreds of learners accessed educational content using existing tablets and computers.
  • Teachers delivered interactive lessons without internet interruptions.
  • Educational resources became available throughout the school day.

Impact

eduLET Hub is reducing the digital divide by ensuring that learners in underserved communities receive the same quality learning opportunities as those in connected urban schools.
